Anish Kapoor comes out of the dark into the light
He's just bought the rights to the darkest black in the world - now he's moved into the lightest studio in the world
The British sculptor Anish Kapoor may have exclusive artistic rights to a new, scientifically developed, super-dark pigment, Vantablack. Yet he’s also pretty keen to let the light in when he wants to.
The British practice Caseyfierro Architects has transformed a series of buildings in South London into a set of brilliantly-lit studio spaces for the artist. The studio, which took a mammoth five years to complete, includes huge fabrication buildings for the artist’s large-scale works, as well as modest, though equally well-illuminated, drawing studios.
Caseyfierro worked around the artist, tailoring in its building works – which included the removal of an entire floor to make way for a north-facing 16 X 4 metre translucent clerestory window (just below roof level) to suit the light-and-dark loving sculptor.
